What Does a Collision Repair Shop Actually Do?

Collision repair looked a lot different 20 years ago. A good eye, a spray gun, and some body filler could get most cars back on the road looking fine. Today, a vehicle that looks repaired and a vehicle that actually is repaired can be two different things, and the gap between them can be a huge safety issue.


Modern vehicles are built around advanced safety systems: cameras, radar, sensors, and structural components built to exacting factory standards. When a collision disrupts any of those systems, restoring the car correctly requires more than a fresh coat of paint.


What happens between drop-off and pickup is more involved than most drivers realize, and the difference between collision repair shops that do it correctly and shops that don’t isn’t always visible from the outside.


Is a Collision Repair Shop Just for Dents and Paint?

What most people expect and what a modern repair involves have grown considerably apart as vehicles have become more sophisticated.


What surprises many drivers is how little it takes to affect a vehicle’s safety systems. A minor fender bender in the parking lot and a significant side impact may look worlds apart from the outside, but both can affect systems the driver never thinks about. 


Adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitors, backup cameras, and windshield-mounted sensors can all be disrupted by an impact that barely leaves a scratch on the paint. None of those show up in a visual inspection of the damage, and not all of them announce themselves with a warning light when something is wrong.


No matter how significant the collision, getting your vehicle repaired correctly is key for safety.


“The biggest misconception people have walking through the door is that we just make their car look good again,” says Joe Townsend, the owner of Dunshee Body & Frame. “There’s so much more happening in the background — scans that need to be done, technology that needs to be programmed. Our field has become a lot more technical, and that changes everything about what a proper repair involves.”


What Happens When You Bring Your Car into a Repair Shop?

The repair process looks different depending on whether the vehicle is drivable when it arrives. There are two distinct tracks, and understanding which one applies helps set realistic expectations from the start.


If Your Car Can’t Be Driven

When a vehicle arrives on a flatbed, it goes directly to an estimator who documents the visible damage, photographs the vehicle, and determines whether the repair is viable. From there, the shop submits the estimate for insurance approval.


Once that comes through, technicians disassemble the vehicle to assess how the damage looks underneath, not just what was visible at the estimate stage.


If Your Car Is Still Drivable

Drivable vehicles follow a different path. A customer calls Dunshee or submits photos through the online estimating tool, schedules a drop-off, and leaves the vehicle for what is typically a three–to-four-day repair. From there, the process moves through a structured sequence.


  • Pre-clean and video documentation — a full record of the vehicle's condition before any work begins

Why Does Teardown Sometimes Change the Repair Estimate?

The estimate a customer receives at drop-off reflects what’s visible from the outside. What’s underneath doesn’t always match.


Modern vehicles use plastic shield panels to protect interior components — bumper covers, wheel well liners, underbody panels — and those shields do their job well enough that substantial structural or mechanical damage can sit completely out of view until disassembly begins. A repair that looks straightforward from the parking lot can look very different once a technician gets inside it.


“The plastic shields are especially an issue when we only have pictures to go off,” Townsend says. “After all the damage is identified, it could add thousands of dollars to the cost of the repair, and no one wins when that happens. That’s why we try to get the car disassembled as soon as we can to cut down on miscommunication and be completely transparent with the customer.”


When technicians find additional damage during teardown, the shop submits a supplemental claim to the insurance company for approval before proceeding. This often adds time to the repair, but it’s a major part of doing things the right way.


The reality of collision repair is that the initial estimate is a starting point, not a guarantee. Shops that write low estimates to win the job tend to surface those additional costs later, after a customer has already committed.

The Resistance Welder

Welding is a fundamental part of structural collision repair, but not all welding equipment works the same way.


“Metal is so advanced on vehicles now that a regular welder can compromise it,” Townsend says. “Our resistance welder hits the perfect temperature and weld every time.”


Manufacturers specify resistance welding for structural repairs for a reason. A weld done with the wrong equipment might look fine on the surface, but the vehicle’s ability to protect its occupants in another collision depends on getting it right the first time. You might not realize that a welder compromised the safety of the vehicle until it’s too late.


ADAS Calibration Equipment

The second piece of equipment needed for a sound repair is the calibration equipment required to restore a vehicle's safety systems after a repair. The equipment is manufacturer-specific and expensive, and understanding how to use it properly requires ongoing training that most shops aren’t investing in.


For shops that don’t have this equipment in-house, calibration typically means sending the vehicle somewhere else, adding time and an unnecessary detour to an already involved process.


What Is ADAS Calibration and Why Does It Matter After an Accident?

A finished repair used to mean the panels lined up, the paint matched, and the car drove straight. That’s still part of it, but it’s no longer the finish line.


According to the Highway Loss Data Institute,
by 2029 more than three-quarters of registered vehicles on roads in the United States will be equipped with rear cameras, and more than half will have blind spot monitoring and front crash prevention systems. Those systems are built into bumpers, windshields, mirrors, and grilles — exactly the areas most commonly affected by a collision.


When those areas are repaired without recalibrating the systems inside them, the technology doesn’t simply stop working. It can keep working incorrectly, giving the driver a false sense of security in a tool that’s no longer reliable.


“Without having proper OEM scan tools, it could cause your technology to misfire,” he says. “It misinforms the system in ways that could lead to an accident, or worse.”

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) certification means a shop has met the manufacturer’s unique requirements for training, equipment, and repair procedures. It’s not a general credential. Each one is earned separately, tied to a specific manufacturer, and needs renewal on an ongoing basis.


Without OEM certification for a specific manufacturer, a shop can’t purchase OEM parts for that make. That means repairs on those vehicles can’t be done to factory standards.
